Milan's history is rich in important artistic events: futurism, abstractism between the two World Wars, "chiarismo", Lucio Fontana and spatialism, Piero Manzoni, the frequent presence of the leading lights of nouveau réalisme... And parallel to all these events, the intense activity of art critics and galleries, specialized magazines and a retinue of collectors and art lovers.
Unlike numerous other major European or North American cities, however, this cultural ferment has not led to the formation of an important museum of modern and contemporary art to promote and enhance Milan's artistic capital.
Today, Milan can count on a wealth of museums and public exhibition spaces and on an impressive number of private organizations - mainly foundations - that generate a variegated cultural offering.
