MOBILITY IN AND AROUND MILAN PDF Print E-mail

The Milanese region is undergoing enormous changes that pose a dual challenge: to maintain the historic central role in the economy, finance, business and culture of Italy that the city of Milan has forged for itself over the centuries while, at the same time, enhancing its appeal in Europe, in the Mediterranean and in the globalized scenario of the third millennium. Accessibility to and mobility within the metropolitan area are, at once, key factors and complex problems that call for timely solutions.

In the space of the next few years, Milan will become one of the key nodes in the Kiev-Lisbon-Rotterdam railway corridor 5, and a link for the Naples-Rome-Northern Europe high speed railway line.
The three international airports already operating in the area – the Malpensa intercontinental hub, Linate City Airport and Orio al Serio-Bergamo, plus the recent new addition of Montichiari-Brescia – make the Milanese region one of the best connected in Europe and in relation to other world capitals.
The Italian motorway network, the most important node of which is in Milan, has to be updated if it is to cope with the ever-increasing influx of traffic into the city. New road links between districts within or adjacent to the metropolitan area are also required. The fourth lane in the Milan-Bergamo section of the A4 from Turin to Trieste is due for completion in 2007. In addition there is to be a new motorway between Brescia - Bergamo – Milan (BreBeMi), major restructuring work on the Pedemontano road network and on the new eastern ring known as the Tangenziale Est Milano (Tem).

To meet the challenge of Milan’s fast-growing global role, new infrastructure and territorial networks are required. The city and its surroundings are preparing for the tasks ahead by accelerating the completion of mobility infrastructure and reinforcing the local public transport system.
