The heartland of metropolitan Milan is the province, which stretches over 1,982 Km2 and includes 189 municipalities.
The Province of Milan has its own specific responsibilities regarding soil protection, environmental protection and improvement, water and energy resources, cultural assets, roads and transport, protection of flora, fauna and parks, waste management, hunting and fishing, healthcare, public hygiene and prophylaxis attributed by national and regional laws, tasks connected with secondary education, artistic education and professional training, data collection and processing and technical administrative assistance to local agencies. It also has responsibilities conferred to it by national and regional legislation.
The Province also promotes and programs government action in the local area. In partnership with the municipalities, for example, and on the basis of programmes drawn up by the Province itself, it promotes and coordinates action in economic, industrial, commercial, tourist, social, cultural and sports sectors, as well as actions of particular importance for the province.
In addition, the Province plans and coordinates work on projects suggested by other local agencies regarding the economic, territorial and environmental programming of the region, working together on the regional development programme and other regional plans and, again, drawing up its own general and sectorial multi-year plans, with reference to the forecasts and aims set by the regional development programme.
