The starting of CIS 1 Cologno Monzese Productive Cluster was made possible thanks to the contribution given by the Labour Ministry as part of its Development Funds Program, Law 236 of 1993; that has supported important initiatives for the reindustrialisation and the reconversion of redundant industrial areas around Sesto San Giovanni (the municipalities of Bresso, Cinisello Balsamo, Cologno Monzese, and Sesto San Giovanni).

The new cluster has 12 small enterprises and was built in a central area of Cologno Monzese called Comparto di Intervento Strategico or CIS 1. The cluster, situated between via Cesare Battisti and via Garibaldi covers an area of 9,600 square metres and is subdivided into lots of around 350, 700, and 1050 square metres.

The 12 enterprises were selected through a competition held in July of 2002 by ASNM and the Municipality of Cologno Monzese, in which 38 entrepreneurs applied. Selection criteria was based on new hiring/surface area covered, the innovative activity, environmental compatibility, reliability and business experience. In addition, selection criteria took in account applicants who were part of the enterprises situated within the urban transformation areas foreseen in the Municipal Urban Plan.

Selected enterprises with 101 or more employees will hire 53 more employees by the end of 2004. The enterprises created the Cooperative for the CIS 1 Productive Cluster, in order to manage, in collaboration with Milano Metropoli, the building of the cluster which is foreseen by the end of 2004.
