Design and Creative Enterprises PDF Print E-mail

Creativity and the creative industries have become key strategic factors in the economic systems of all the world's major metropolitan areas. In Milan, creative industries - and especially those linked to sectors such as advertising, architecture, fashion, design, art, music, software, TV and radio - have not only profoundly characterized the city's socio-economic development, but today represent one of the main drivers of metropolitan Milan's growth.

True to its mission, Milano Metropoli has identified the creative economy as one of the area's strategic industrial sectors. We are thus committed to promoting it in order to improve the competitive edge, innovative impact, job opportunities and appeal of the Milanese territorial system. It is no coincidence that within the context of the Creazione (2004) conferences and workshops, our Agency was a pioneer in Italy in opening the debate on the value of creative capital as a driving force behind integrated local development.

To foster growth in these key sectors for our area, we work in synergy with both the public and the private sectors, universities, research centers and higher education colleges. The main strategies and projects developed include:

Promoting initiatives to heighten awareness of Milan's design and creativity chain throughout the world:

  • MILANOMADEINDESIGN.  In 2006 and 2007 Milano Metropoli coordinated and managed the international MILANOMADEINDESIGN road show, devised to promote the businesses, artisan workshops, training colleges and research centres that make up the network behind the complex design chain. The road show - supported jointly by all Milan's public institutions - attracted over 72,000 visitors and fostered exchanges of ideas and integration between design professionals (creative designers, artisans, entrepreneurs...) and between Milanese and foreign companies, in a view to mutually profitable synergies. (See the road show section).

  • International partnerships: in the context of international promotion of the sector, Milano Metropoli has teamed up with Corporación Buenos Aires Sur (the Argentinian capital's development agency) to implement the activities of the Buenos Aires Centro Metropolitano de Design and create opportunities for exchanges of ideas and experiences between Argentinian and Milanese companies.

Creating new spaces and services to improve creative enterprises, talent and up-and-coming professions.

  • Hub Creativo - Polo di Eccellenza Soderini. The centre of excellence known as Polo di Eccellenza - Cantiere del Nuovo in Via Soderini is a project devised by the Province of Milan for training, work, entrepreneurship, innovation and art. Milano Metropoli prepared a feasibility study that identified certain strategic functions for the centre and for the city of Milan: a centre for the future of work and the up-and-coming professions; a "spinner" to enhance Milan's university and higher education system and a Creative Hub to support the start-up and consolidation of creative companies, with services and spaces for the incubation and pre-incubation of creative experimentation workshops and enterprises.

  • START UP project. The aim of this scheme, financed by the Province of Milan, is to experiment with a pre-incubation programme for creative enterprises. The idea is to identify the specific entrepreneurial nature and needs of the "creative class" operating in the Milanese area and to build a replicable model in the future Polo di Eccellenza - Cantiere del Nuovo. The project includes the publication, by July 2009, of a competition to find 10 new entrepreneurial ideas in the design, architecture, fashion, visual communication, multimedia, photography or/and audio and video production sectors. The pre-incubation programme will last 7 months and will take place in Milano Metropoli's LIB innovative business incubator.

  • Spazio CreatiCityGate. This is a multi-purpose space, created in viale Pasubio 14, to give young creative and cultural talents the chance to prepare exhibitions, presentations and events to promote their own work. CreatiCityGate also sets out to anticipate and experiment certain activities devised and included in the Hub Creativo - Polo di Eccellenza project in via Soderini. The space has been provided by Milano Metropoli and the Amici di Critica cultural association, with the contribution of the Province of Milan.

  • Creative Industry Project: since 2004, via BIC La Fucina, our Agency has been contributing to the project promoted by the Province of Milan and by the Chamber of Commerce to encourage the start-up and development of creative enterprises. Support takes the form of funding, creating a community of enterprises, specific services and promoting networks and partnerships: www.impresecreative.it

  • Via the Design Net project (2002-2003), set up in partnership with the Milan Politecnico and Cestec, Milano Metropoli experimented with a model for transferring know-how and value from the university design world to the SME and artisan world.
