Apart from playing a decisive role in the new economic value creation processes, culture has become one of the privileged levers for all towns and cities pursuing a minimally consistent and ambitious strategy of local development.

The cultural projects and initiatives devised and promoted by the Milano Metropoli Development Agency (hereinafter "the Agency") are in fact closely linked to the idea of sustainable local development. They have been developed within urban regeneration, governance and local re-launch schemes in order to enhance the appeal and quality of the environment, integration and social cohesion and to generate new businesses and job opportunities.

Main projects and initiatives

  • Sistema Culturale Nord Milano: a project for North Milan launched in 2007 and coordinated by the Agency in order to create an integrated system of cultural projects, policies and services that can reinforce the area's identity and increase its appeal. The project also aims to create new business and job opportunities in North Milan (an area that includes Bresso, Cinisello Balsamo, Cologno Monzese, Cormano, Cusano Milanino, Paderno Dugnano and Sesto San Giovanni). In 2009 a Temporary Association of Purpose was formed to provide a rational and unitary cultural offering, enhancing the existing public and private cultural heritage and the environmental and territorial resources connected with it, to promote and communicate the North Milan Cultural System and to create an effective model of cultural network governance.

  • Casa degli Artisti - Villa Caimi. The Agency prepared a feasibility study for the renovation of Villa Caimi, a stately home located within the Villa Scheibler Park, in the Quarto Oggiaro district of Milan. The study also included a series of spaces and services to be devoted to artistic production, to temporary residential facilities linked to the creation and fruition of art, animation and artistic/cultural planning.

  • Bando Expo dei Territori: verso il 2015. The aim of this competition, devised, promoted and managed by the Agency and by the Province of Milan, with the support of Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lombardia, is to stimulate and support the sort of cultural and tourism projects (axis 3 of the competition) that can effectively contribute over the next few years to the development and competitiveness of the Milanese metropolitan area.

  • Metrocult. The Agency has devised and directed the formation of the first Milanese cultural social network, a participatory pathway which, since 2007, has engaged the metropolitan cultural organizations and their projects and arranged them in a network. Within the context of this project, funded by the Province of Milan, a 2-yearly event is organized in Milan, known as the biennale della cultura, along with artistic and multimedia events such as Metrocult Day, which try to involve residents of the various quarters and  urban areas of Milan. This network lives, breathes and expands day by day through the web portal http://www.metrocult.it/.

  • Fonderia del Suono. A feasibility study prepared by the Agency in 2005 to open a poly functional centre in Cormano devoted to music produced in the province of Milan and to the birth of media and electro-acoustic media. The aim is to foster musicological research and musical creation. The project includes a documentation centre and suitable spaces for producing, listening, recording and disseminating music.
