The Milanese region is planning a huge, structured and complex green belt that is to gird the whole metropolitan area of Milan. The project goes by the name of MetroBosco and is an idea put forward by the provincial authorities to turn the existing green spaces around Milan into an enormous metropolitan lung, stretching the whole way round the city.

The plan is for this green belt to immerse the city’s ring roads in 30 thousand hectares of vegetation.

The Province of Milan has various tools in place to discuss ideas, opinions, projects and feasibility studies put forward by a range of partners.

These include: 

• A forum for woodland as a place for debate;
• A woodland charter, setting out the basic principles;
• The formation of a specific agency to handle projects and public and private economic resources, to enhance the compatibility and sustainability of each project, coordinating the realization thereof within the context of the overall plan, according to the guidelines contained in the "Città di città" provincial strategic plan.
