The use of public transport is crucial for mobility in the Milanese region. Apart from the railways, a widespread network of public transport operates throughout the Milanese metropolitan area. Public transport is mainly used by commuters and students. In fact, in the province of Milan, the heart of the Milanese region, approximately one third of all travellers use it, with average travelling times of 40 minutes and average distances per trip of 16 km.
The main public transport company in the Milanese region is Azienda Trasporti Milanesi Spa (ATM). It guarantees its service over an area of 1,052 km2, including Milan itself and 85 fringe towns in the province, with a resident population of some 3 million inhabitants. ATM runs 3 underground train lines, 93 bus lines, 20 tram lines and 3 trolley bus lines.
Milan’s metropolitan underground is the largest in Italy, stretching over 76 km and with 84 stations. Every year it carries around 31 million passengers. Its capacity will be considerably augmented over the coming years with the construction of three new lines.
