NEW RHO-PERO EXHIBITION CENTRE
Designed by Massimiliano Fuksas and completed in little more than two years at a cost of €755 mln, the new Fieramilano exhibition centre covers a surface area of 2 million sq m, and is the largest of its kind in Italy and in Europe.
It is located in the Rho-Pero district, on a fully reclaimed and regenerated brownfield site, occupied from 1952 to 1992 by one of Italy’s main oil refineries. Fieramilano spearheads a redevelopment scheme that is hoped give a new image and a new lease of social and economic life to the whole area of almost 110 km2 to the west of the Lombard capital. Apart from Rho and Pero, the area includes the towns of: Arese, Baranzate, Bollate, Cesate, Cornaredo, Garbagnate Milnese, Lainate, Novate Milanese, Pogliano Milanese, Pregnana Milanese, Settimo Milanese, Solaro and Vanzago.
Fieramilano Rho-Pero consists of 8 pavilions, 6 of which on one floor and 2 over two floors. This is where events involving large spaces and complex logistics are held. Fieramilano City, on the other hand, hosts logistically “simpler” occasions, such as fashion weeks or craft exhibitions. The two trade show facilities offer a combined exhibition space of 710 thousand sq m.
The Fiera Milano network is also an important “business card” for Italian exports. In fact, it has 43 offices covering 67 countries. From 1990 to 2001, for example, Fiera Milano organized BYT Italia in Russia (a prestigious showcase for quality Italian fashion and household goods). Over the years the event has specialized into two macro sectors, giving rise to two new fairs: Macef Moscow (an international gift, household article and fashion accessory fair) organized in partnership with Fiera Milano International, and Mifur Moscow (an international fur and leather fair held in Moscow) and organized with the trade association AIP.
Between 2005 and 2006, Fiera Milano Spa – which manages Milan’s whole trade show compartment – recorded consolidated revenues of €261.7m with a net profit of €19.1m.
Lastly, Fiera Milano is a powerful economic driver for the entire Lombardy Region. A survey conducted by Bocconi University in 2003 and presented on 20 June 2007 to the Financial Community in Paris put Fiera Milano’s economic fallout at €4.3bn. No less than 44% of this (€1.9bn) is generated directly by exhibitors.
FIERAMILANO CITY
It is right in the heart of Milan that the most important transformation of the Milanese region’s trade show system is taking place. By the time the new Fieramilano City project reaches completion in the year 2014, only 185 thousand of the 440 thousand sq m of the old Milan fair will be occupied by the new exhibition venue. The remaining 255 thousand sq m will be converted according to the plans put forward by the City Life syndicate, winner of the international competition organized in April 2003 by Sviluppo Sistema Fiera.
In the late 1990s, three new pavilions were built on the area known as Portello. Fieramilano City can currently count on 26 pavilions with a gross exhibition space of 348 thousand sq m, plus a further 200 thousand destined for non-exhibition purposes.
